The Everygirl’s Favorite Ikea Hacks

I could go on and on about my love for IKEA. I mean, it’s the single biggest reason my first apartment had any furniture to speak of. Had it not been for this Swedish retailer, my roommates and I would probably have been sitting in an empty rowboat or watching TV in lawn chairs a la Chandler and Joey.

But thankfully, there was always IKEA, with its $300 sofas and $10 coffee tables. The only problem? It’s not exactly a well-kept secret. Spotting IKEA furniture isn’t exactly a difficult task, and while I appreciate the price point, I still want my home to feel like its one-of-a-kind and uniquely mine. 

I would barely call myself crafty, let alone handy, but these hacks have me itching to go to town on a few of my lingering IKEA pieces to give them a new lease on life. And some of them only require a coat of paint! Ladies, prepare to be inspired.

 

DIY Faux Marble Top

A marble look for a tiny fraction of the cost? Yes, please! I splurged on a marble dining table in my early twenties, and let’s just say I’m kicking myself after seeing this much more budget-friendly version.

 

DIY Hollywood Regency Shelving

These shelves cost $80 + a can of spray paint. RUN, DON’T WALK. I love the added touch of the painted knobs attached to the top of unit to give it an extra dose of glam. Form and function at its best.

 

DIY Transformed Tarva Dresser

I would never have recognized this dresser from its original form! New legs and hardware added some serious sophistication. Sure, it requires a little elbow grease, but considering the results, I’d say it’s time will spent.

 

Jenny Komenda’s PAX Wardrobe Hack

I’ve wanted to transform my closet ever since I spotted this hack from Jenny Komenda, one of my all-time favorite designers. Where do I begin? The hardware, the mirrors, the paint. It’s. just. so. good.

 

The $14.99 Step-Stool Turned Nightstand

This DIY is riiiiiight up my alley. A coat of paint and some quick out-of-the-box thinking and voila! A brand new piece of furniture that’s arguably one of the cutest and most budget-friendly nightstands on the market.

 

DIY Modern Vanity

This wall shelf makes the perfect vanity with the addition of some wooden legs, and I love that it works in tight spaces given the depth. Bonus: It could easily be styled as an entry table if that’s more your speed!

 

DIY Mid Century Credenza

A credenza is a great addition to any room for convenient, hideaway storage. Use it in the dining room to store dining and entertainment essentials or in the living room or bedroom to conceal extra blankets or your movie collection.

 

Copper Kitchen Pendant Lights

Ah, the spray paint does it again. How much more high-end do these pendants look in their new shade of copper? It’s tough to justify expensive light fixtures after you’ve already renovated an entire kitchen, so it’s nice to know you can cut corners and still get an amazing result.

 

A Built-In Billy Bookshelf

I mean, who DOESN’T dream of having a library ladder? I would slide across those Billy bookshelves like I was straight out of Beauty and the Beast without hesitation. This one takes a little bit of patience, but considering the fact that hiring a contractor to make you built-ins could run you thousands, I’d say it’s worth the ol’ college try.

 

Gold Leaf Console Table

Sometimes the simplest changes make the biggest impact. The “gold leaf” legs on this baby look so good your friends will never believe you when you tell them it’s a DIY. Plus, the kit to achieve the same look is only $11!

 

TARVA Dresser Makeover

Obsession doesn’t begin to cover how much I love the updated hardware on this piece. SERIOUS transformation.

 

Retro Sideboard

This piece looks just like something I would see getting sold for $1,000 or more back in my interior designer days. You can get the same vibe for way (way) less and take all the credit when your guests can’t stop complimenting you on it.

 

Hemnes Black and White Vanity Makeover

Prior to its makeover, the Hemnes vanity is kind of like that same black sweater we all own; they all look the same, there’s nothing defining about them, and they could be from anywhere. Swapping the hardware and faucet elevated the entire room and made this piece look twice as expensive as it really was. Bravo!

 

Simple Rast Dresser Upgrade

A chest with storage for under $50 that looks this good? Yes, please. This works as a nightstand or as a stand alone storage piece in an entry or hallway.

Reclaimed wood furniture can typically run you several hundred dollars, so we’re all about this hack for a fraction of the cost. We like this styled best with simple and clean accessories so that the headboard remains the focal point.

Never underestimate the power of contact paper. This simple addition to the MALM dresser immediately makes it look three times as expensive as it actually is!

I would seriously never have known that this piece was made from the SEKTION wall cabinet. The extra trim and centered knobs feel retro in just the right way.
