Editor Favorites: 5 Things You Should Try Right Now

When I was younger, my parents used to always tease me and say that I was every advertiser’s dream — every time I would see an ad or commercial for a new product or  service or whatever, I immediately wanted needed to be a part of it. I’m a victim of the zeitgeist — I love the latest and greatest, and I am always up to date on products and services to make my life easier and better.

This may seem excessive to you, but here’s why it’s not — thanks to my ample knowledge of all things current, I’m the perfect person to come to when you need recommendations. Here are the overall life-changers currently on my radar — all things you should add to your life immediately.

1. A wine delivery service

If I had a dollar for every time I stood confused in a wine aisle, I’d be able to afford a lot more wine. I am by no means a wine expert, but I am CERTAINLY a wine lover. While I definitely have a good idea of what types of wine I like (I much prefer white to red, and I tend to like drier over sweeter varietals), I don’t necessarily know why I like what I like — and I definitely don’t know what foods to pair with my vino of choice.

Thankfully for me, my checking account, and my fridge, I’ve discovered the secret to answering all my wine-related questions. Bright Cellars is a wine matching and delivery service — I took a quick online quiz, and they were able to match me with wine selections using their unique algorithm and points system — and then the selections were promptly delivered to my home. The questions were super straightforward (there was nothing about oakiness, age, or tannins) — I was simply asked about my coffee preferences, my tastes in desserts, and more. What I found was that chardonnay is my jam — and that there are a ton of different KINDS of chardonnay worth trying (and they even told me what foods to pair with each type!). It was a perfect way to refine my taste, try new wine, and enjoy the full experience — all without having to leave my house or carry bottles of wine down the streets of downtown Chicago (not that I’ve ever, you know, done that before…).

2. A solid BB cream

My skin and I have never been on great terms — I have hormonal acne, and I’ve spent the better part of my life attempting to cover it up while simultaneously treating it. I wish so bad that I could go back and tell my teenage self to ditch all the heavy foundation — Young Abby, great coverage doesn’t have to be so matted and cakey!! A few months ago, I switched over to a green-shaded BB cream — and I can honestly say that I will never ever go back. I am OBSESSED with showing people how it works — the before and after of my acne-scarred face is truly alarming/impressive. I put some of the green cream on the back of my hand, then apply it to my face with a foundation brush. It turns from green to my natural skin tone almost instantly, and it provides superior coverage without clogging my pores. I. Am. Obsessed.

3. Resistance band workouts

As a 20-something living in one of the largest cities in America, I’m constantly in pursuit of ways to cut down on costs and make my lifestyle less expensive. My apartment building has a decent gym, so I usually spend my mornings sweating it out on the treadmill or using the free weights. In a turn of events that should surprise no one, that’s gotten pretty boring. In an attempt to mix up my workout routine without adding any crazy costs, I began adding resistance bands to my workout repertoire. They’re easy to get the hang of, and they travel SUPER well — work out on the cheap, whether you’re in your own apartment, on vacation, or just about anywhere else.

4. A youthful fashion trend

Source: Madewell

Does anyone else feel like you instantly become a kid again once the weather gets warmer? When the temps rise, I become immediately nostalgic for afternoons spent playing in the backyard sprinkler, evenings spent getting ice cream with my siblings, and long days at the amusement park (Six Flags Great America was truly my home away from home). While my 20-something self can’t go back to those days of summertime freedom and bliss, I still want to be able to incorporate that youthful whimsy into my wardrobe. Enter shorteralls. I am so glad that overalls are back in style this year — they’re seriously the easiest and cutest fashion choice, and the shorts versions are so perfect and breezy for summer. I’ll be wearing these all summer long (can’t you just HEAR the ice cream truck!?).

5. A binge-worthy podcast

The Everygirl’s Editorial Director, Allyson, and I are both pop culture junkies — so I always turn to her to help me choose a new show or podcast for binging. Allyson recommended Crimetown to me — it’s definitely not new, but it’s absolutely worth checking out if you haven’t already. Basically, each season of the podcast dives into crime in a different American city. Up first — organized crime and corruption in Rhode Island. The episodes are all short and easily digestable (aka, perfect for binge-listening!). Fans of Serial or Making a Murderer-type shows will love this.
