2. Catch-22
While this series will soon be on Hulu for your viewing pleasure, there is still time to catch up on the classic tale written by Joseph Heller — that is, if you skipped this portion of the reading curriculum in high school. Catch-22 was a revolutionary book for its time in that it broke typical narrative structure and exposed readers, unapologetically, to the horrors of war. The present day Catch-22 is set up to honor the classic American novel with performances by George Clooney and Hugh Laurie scheduled to premiere May 17.

3. The Sun is Also a Star
Based on the very popular young adult novel, The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, a film adaptation will also be coming to theaters mid-May. Starring Blackish star Yara Shahidi and Riverdale’s Charles Melton, the two young actors play Daniel and Natasha, two teenagers that fall in love amidst worries of deportation and turmoil at home. The book has captured the hearts of many young readers, and the film, directed by Ry Russo-Young, is a release anticipated by many this spring.

4. Artemis Fowl
Fantasy and sci-fi meet in this thrilling film adaptation of the eight-book series, Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer. The books follow the story of Artemis, a quirky young man on a mission to help his family at any cost. The film stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw as the young Artemis, and was directed by Kenneth Branagh who brought us the live-action adaptation of Cinderella and the beloved superhero tale, Thor.

5. Where’d You Go, Bernadette
Another unlikely protagonist graces the screen in Maria Semple’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette. It follows a borderline agoraphobic, deeply pessimistic homebody, Bernadette Fox, played by Cate Blanchett, who suddenly vanishes — leaving her daughter to track down the clues to her mother’s peculiar disappearance. With plenty of laughs and intrigue, this film adaptation stars a handful of our favorite funny women like SNL’s Kristen Wiig and Judy Greer of Archer. It’s likely to be a summer favorite.

6. It: Chapter Two
For those that appreciate darker fare, Stephen King’s It will be returning to the big screen this summer in It: Chapter Two. Unlike the preceding story, the victims of the marauding clown are no longer young children tormented by a nightmare come to life, but full-grown adults intent on exacting revenge. See Peter Skarsgard return to this infamous role along with new faces like Bill Hader, James McAvoy, and Jessica Chastain as members of the “Loser’s Club” this summer.

7. The Art of Racing in the Rain

Following with the multitude of dog-themed films coming out this summer, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is a classic and touching read about the special bond that undoubtedly exists between dogs and their people. As if placing a dog at the center of a film isn’t reason enough to watch, the film also stars Milo Ventimiglia and Amanda Seyfried and is scheduled to come out at the end of the summer in September.
