A couple of months ago, I was having a sex chat with a few friends of mine. This is a normal thing we do, and especially now as a sex writer, it’s a great place to discover new ideas and issues people might face that I’ve never experienced. Somehow, my friends and I got into a discussion about lube.
“I don’t have to use that. I’ve never needed it,” said my close gal pal. (We’ll call her Megan.) Megan, I’ll say it again: you are wrong.
Personal lubricant is not a choice in my book; it is a necessary tool for sexual pleasure and health. If you’re asking me (because you’re reading this article, I’m assuming you are), lube is the best sex toy you could ever add to the bedroom. Here’s why:
Younger women can use it too
Many people have this misconception that lube is only for women going through menopause who can’t get there themselves. This is false. Vaginal dryness is a common issue women of all ages face. Stress, lack of sleep, hormonal issues, and more can cause dryness regardless of your age. If you’re ever dealing with dryness, lube should be one of the first things you try.
It’s more pleasurable for women AND men
If both parties enjoy it, it’s a no-brainer, right? Women report that sex with lubricant is better than without. For men, lubrication creates more friction. Studies actually show lube makes it 50 percent easier to orgasm than without. Basically, lubricant doesn’t make it any worse for anyone (most of the time!), so there’s no reason to not give it a try!
You’ll also have to spend less time during foreplay. While foreplay can be the most enjoyable part of sex for some people, there are others who want to get to the main event as fast as possible. Lubricant allows you to get exactly where you want much faster.
It prevents pain
The friction during sex can cause tearing and abrasion on the penis and vagina. Yeah, it’s as painful as it sounds. Lubricant creates a barrier between the two, decreasing any pain or swelling you might have during sex as well.
While you might think your body is well-equipped to get the job done on its own, the repeated motions of sex can cause dryness. So, while you might be ready to go at first, after a little while, your body might not be producing enough to cover all the bases. Therefore, using lubricant might be the most beneficial if used in the middle of sex rather than in the beginning.
It makes using toys so much easier
Using lubricant is sometimes necessary with sex toys because they obviously aren’t able to lubricate themselves in any way. Also, because using the toys can sometimes be a part of your foreplay, your body isn’t ready to go just yet.
Adding a lubricant into your me-time is a perfect way to change up the sensation too! Because lubricant adds more friction, it can change up how sex feels, especially if you’re using a toy. Try using a little bit at first and build up to using more over time. Be careful though because if you’re not paying attention, you’ll end up with a nightstand covered in sticky liquid. Gross.
