What to Be for Halloween, Based on Your Enneagram

By now, I’m sure we’ve all read our Enneagram profile over and over, nodding in agreement with our strengths and cringing at our weaknesses. Regardless of the type you are, your Enneagram can be a great source of information to help you make decisions about you career, relationships, setting and achieving goals, even the destination of your next vacation. So, why not also use this useful tool to help you pick a costume for the most personality-centric holiday? Find out which costume best aligns with your Enneagram profile and put your unique personality on display this Halloween.

Ah, type one, the rationalists and crusaders of the Enneagram universe. As a one, you intrinsically have a need to answer to a higher calling, always. You are motivated by the desire to leave the world in a better state than the way you found it, and this drive can ultimately lead to perfectionist tendencies that can make you come across as rigid and regulated. In truth, you feel you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders and it’s high time you express yourself with a fun and original Halloween costume.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg

What better way to symbolize than with a figure as emblematic with strength as RBG. Not only is the Ruth Bader Ginsberg look relatively easy and low maintenance to pull off, it’s iconic and immediately recognizable.

Other Ideas for ones:

  1. Superhero
  2. Suffragette
  3. Rose Quartz from Steven Universe
  4. DIY Lady Justice Statue
  5. Rosie the Riveter

Type twos are caring, personable, and self-sacrificing folk. They deeply empathize with everyone around them and draw motivation from the desire to feel loved. Twos are the Enneagram type in which you confide, and true to a two’s nature, they will put aside prior commitments and prioritize the needs of others before their own. This inclination can also be the downfall of a two, as sometimes they fall into the trap of over neediness and possessiveness, becoming too heavily involved in the lives of their friends and loved ones. Take an opportunity this Halloween and step outside your comfort zone with a costume that is just as beautiful as your kind nature.

A Monarch Butterfly

There are many ways to go about creating a monarch butterfly costume, and if you’re in the mood to get crafty, you can make a beautiful set of wings with nothing more than a pair of scissors, glue sticks, and garbage bags. Then, sew the wings along the side seam of a simple, black dress and apply makeup or face paint as your see fit to put the final touch on your look.

Other ideas for twos:

  1. Nurse/Doctor
  2. Dorothy
  3. ’50s Pan Am Flight Attendant
  4. Mia from La La Land
  5. Duckie from Pretty in Pink
  6. Wall-e

The success-seekers of type three never lose sight of their ambition. They are self-assured and competent, always striving to reach their goals and lose themselves in their work. Threes are a unique breed because they tend to lead lives ruled by their workaholic tendencies, yet their charm supersedes this almost unhealthy drive to success and allows them to be the role models of the Enneagram universe. If threes feel as though they are not maxing out their potential, they can spiral into anxiety for fear that they will become worthless and unknown. Kick that fear to the curb and embody your favorite character, animal, or historical figure that makes you feel as special as you truly are.

Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was a pioneer in aviation, setting an altitude record for female pilots only months after she first stepped into a plane. Earhart is a classic symbol of ambition and success, and her iconic outfit is easy to recreate, it’s recognizable, and as an added bonus, you’ll be warm!

Other ideas for threes:

  1. King/Queen
  2. Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction
  3. Rey from Star Wars
  4. Arya Stark
  5. Fox

Arguably, type four is the Enneagram that appeals the most strongly to all of the artists out there. Fours are sensitive and reserved, withholding themselves from the scrutiny of others while also sticking to their guns and expressing themselves at any cost. The individualist embodies a personality as analogous as their name; they have a drive to truly know themselves and express their identity. Take your artistic inclination to the next level this Halloween by painting your face like an impressionist painting, dressing as one of your favorite femme fatales, or take on a figure from history that had a particular flair for individuality.

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo painted 55 self-portraits throughout her body of work of over 200 paintings. She had an enigmatic style for the time, embracing both halves of her Hispanic and Germanic identity, and expressed herself through her clothing. And so, before donning her signature style, a level of understanding must be brought to a Frida Kahlo costume. For instance, the significance of sterling silver earrings worn with an indigenous necklace made of jadeite, or draping a rebozo scarf over a dress with a traditional German silhouette. Frida Kahlo’s personal style served more than her individualism, it was a political statement.

Other ideas for fours:

  1. Belle
  2. ’70s Hippie
  3. Sia
  4. Amelie
  5. Lichtenstein Painting

Conversely to the four’s creativity and whimsical nature, fives are highly logical and curious beings always questioning the ways of the world and thriving on complex thought. Unlike fours, type five struggles with isolationist tendencies, preferring to get lost in their own thoughts and theories as opposed to seeking the comfort of others to derive purpose and meaning. Take a step out of your comfort zone and pick something witty but recognizable this Halloween.

Sabrina Spellman

The relaunch of Sabrina the Teenage Witch has been relatively successful as far as reboots go! And along with an entirely new, somewhat darker vibe to ‘90s sitcom, Sabrina Spellman fully embodies the logical, independent nature of a five. Choose from any one of her signature looks and let loose the party animal within.

Other ideas for fives:

  1. Sherlock Holmes
  2. Rowena Ravenclaw
  3. Eleven from Stranger Things
  4. Eliza Thornberry from The Wild Thornberrys
  5. Maleficent

Sixes draw their strength and confidence from the company they keep. That’s not to say this type is particularly extroverted or the life of the party. Rather, loyalists are security-seeking, hard working, and responsible types, with the desire to hold to and creating lasting relationships with those around them. Sixes embody contradiction: on the one hand, they are incredibly capable and courageous souls with a keen ability to lead, but they are also prone to anxiety becoming fearful and pessimistic at times. Embrace your lovable spirit this Halloween with a costume as iconic as you are!

Princess Diana

Princess Diana’s iconic ’90s style has been on the internet a lot lately. And for good reason — she pulled off bike shorts better than any influencer in 2019. Like type six, Princess Diana had a devotion to those she loved and despite her status as the Princess of Wales, she was always relatable, beautiful, and seemingly down to earth. Choose from any one of Lady Di’s iconic looks from a formal, Princess-worthy gown to one of her more casual outfits.

Other ideas for sixes:

  1. Marilyn Monroe
  2. Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s
  3. Sailor
  4. Bonnie from Bonnie and Clyde

Type Sevens act just as their name sounds. They are extroverted, optimistic, and excitable — the cheerleaders of the Enneagram universe. Sevens embrace all of the challenges life throws at them with a smile on their face, and embrace every day with a sense of adventure. This tendency though can sometimes cause sevens to become scatter-brained, distracted, and indecisive, unable to choose the right path because their Renaissance-man-like qualities sometimes present them with too many options. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed with all of the exciting possibilities of what to be this Halloween, try something unexpected that is sure to get a laugh.

Elle Woods

Enthusiasts, we know you like to have a good time and be the life of the party. Elle Woods is the perfect embodiment of all things seven: she’s witty, ambitious, and she approaches her goals with an open mind and enviable ease. It’s easy to throw on a pink dress and get your fellow party goers to engage in the bend and snap, but channeling deposition-class-Elle-Woods will give you just as many fun options and bring just as many smiles to everyone’s faces.

Other ideas for sevens:

  1. Cher from Clueless
  2. ’80s Jazzerciser
  3. Kimmy Schmidt
  4. Genie
  5. Bob Ross

Similarly to an enthusiast, a challenger is just that: they thrive on a need to be in control and push back on anyone or anything that gets in their way. Eights are decisive and direct. They have an affinity for leadership and take the reins on everything from starting their own companies to running a household, making peace to waging war. While eights tend to be less open about their emotional state, preferring to keep those they love at arm’s length, they have an intense calling to provide for themselves and those around them. Often industrious and pragmatic, eights approach the world with a “can-do” attitude and we think that should be your approach to Halloween as well.

Daenerys Targaryen

There’s never been a more challenger-esque character than Daenerys Targaryen’s character climax in the final season of Game of Thrones. Now, we won’t reveal any spoilers here, but for those that followed the series, it only makes sense that Dany would be the perfect Halloween costume for the bold, calculated, and unrelenting eight.

If you find yourself drawn to spirituality or finding inner and outer peace, you might be type nine of the Enneagram diagram: the peacemaker. Nines are the chameleons of all the Enneagram’s types, and frequently, these individuals have the hardest time identifying strongly with just one personality — their open-mindedness and spirituality allows them to see themselves in every Enneagram personality. From this strength of versatility, it is often that nines encounter their biggest weakness: a sense of true identity. You are idyllic and whimsical with a tendency to daydream and quietly go about your day, unassuming. Emphasize this ability to be all things to everyone with a costume that is as centered as you are.

A Greek Muse

You might remember a depiction of the Muses in the ’90s film Hercules. While the animated characters only slightly alluded to their ties to the arts in the Disney film, in Greek mythology, the nine Muses were the source of inspiration for poets, philosophers, and artists alike. It’s up to you which Muse to be like Thalia, the Muse of comedy; or Calliope the muse of heroic poetry and the source of inspiration behind Homer’s The Iliad. Either way, we’re confident your otherworldliness will come through no matter which one you choose.

Other ideas for nines:

  1. Mary Poppins
  2. Jedi
  3. Glinda the Good Witch
  4. Captain Marvel
  5. Dustin from Stranger Things
